A Comparison of Othello and the Movie O When Shakespeare composed the tragedy Othello televisions were not. Along with no televisions, life in the late 1500s had many different qualities than it does today. This time period had no war on drugs and no high school shootings. Peer pressure was not an issue. The audiences of Othello in the 1500s did not face the circumstances that we, American high school students, face today. With these significant differences in daily life, come the attempts of movie creators to help prevent our modern day tragedies. The movie "O", released on August 31, 2001, is a retelling of Shakespeare's Othello set in a college prepatory school. This movie, shelved over two years due to the epidemic of high school shootings in the late 1990s, is an attempt to take in hand these disasters caused by peer pressure and jealousy (Kurnit). "O" is an effective restoration of Shakespeare's Othello in this day and age as it addresses issues that are imperative and dangerous to its audience. Jealousy is a dominating factor in both the modern day and Shakespearean Othello. In Othello, the jealousy develops from Iago, who thinks he has been overlooked as his flag officer and as Othello's loyal best friend. In "O", Hugo is jealous of his father's relationship with Odin. Hugo's father, Duke, is also the basketball coach of the team both Odin and Hugo play for. Odin is the team captain and receives the "most valuable player" award which he shares with his "go-to guy," Mike--not Hugo. Hugo believes that he is the M.V.P. of the Hawks and is filled with jealousy when his father gives the award to Odin and says, "I'm very proud to say this publicly, I love him like my own son" ("O"). With the changed setting come many differences: drugs and alcohol, peer pressure, violence, and different sources for jealousy and hatred. These issues are the dilemmas we, as teenagers in this new millennium, are faced with day to day. "O" addresses these new era evils without abandoning the original themes and major issues of Shakespeare's Othello. Imprisonment of Women Exposed in The Yellow Wallpaper When asked the question of why she chose to write 'The Yellow Wallpaper', Charlotte Perkins Gilman claimed that experiences in her own life dealing with a nervous condition, then termed 'melancholia', had prompted her to write the short story as a means to try and save other people from a similar fate. Although she may have suffered from a similar condition to the narrator of her illuminating short story, Gilman's story cannot be coined merely a tale of insanity. Insanity is the vehicle for Gilman's larger comment on the atrocities of social conformity. The main character of "The Yellow Wallpaper" comes to recognize the inhumanity in society's treatment of women, and in her awakening to this, visualizes her torment in the faded yellow wallpaper that hangs in her chambers, her jail. The unnamed narrator of the tale is purposefully left unnamed; the narrator could be any wife, any mother, any woman. Gilman transforms the hysterical, insane female of early 19th century literature into g enius. The first striking image that readers of "The Yellow Wallpaper" are presented with is not that of a room, it is not of the house, but of the character of John, the husband. John is described as a man of a "practical and extreme" nature (246). His presence throughout the tale provides for the narrator's motive. John refuses to accept her wife's condition; he does not believe that there is anything truly wrong with her. If a physician of high standing, and one's own husband, assures friends and relatives that there is really nothing the matter with one but temporary nervous depression, a slight hysterical tendency - what is one to do? A Civil Action Essay Jay Lee 9-8-09 In the movie â€Å"A Civil Action†, the environmental problem was that trichloroethylene and silicone was placed into the water in the town of Woburn. It happened through a tanning company pouring chemicals on the hides of animals and it seeping out. The company also placed a lot of barrels with the dangerous chemicals into the ground and it seeped out into the wells of the town. The damage it caused to the environment and to the people was a huge amount. It poisoned the town and children were killed because of it. The chemicals caused the children to get Leukemia and they died. The people blamed the companies Beatrice Foods and W. R. Grace & Co for neglecting proper cleaning habits. This movie showed that humans really need to practice good habits or humans will not be able to survive. One tanning company poisoned an entire town. If everyone was like the tanning company, everyone would be dead by now. People really need to practice good habits because we cannot live in a world that is polluted by dangerous chemicals. The earth cannot become like the town of Woburn. We cannot continue to pollute the earth or we will harm ourselves and each other. People also need to know what they are dumping into the earth. People have to continually study what they are dumping into the earth or they may end up getting sued and hurting people. Jan Schlichtmann found out a lot about what happens to people and the earth after studying the harmful effects of the chemicals that were being dumped into the town of Woburn. People need to study these things because the earth cannot take the harm from the chemicals nor can the people. The earth is all connected and it was shown in the movie. The chemicals from the plant were dumped into a ditch. The chemicals traveled through the soil into the groundwater. The chemicals then reached the wells of the community. From there the people drank the water. One action can affect everybody. The earth is all connected somehow and putting something harmful in it is just hurting everyone and everything. The earth does not take a problem and just magically make it disappear, it stays within the earth and people need to find a way to do something better or everyone suffers. People alter the planet a lot. In the movie, just a tanning company polluted the ground water and killed people because of it. â€Å"A Civil Action† showed a lot of things that dealt with people hurting the planet. People should have to pay because they are responsible for more than just hurting people. The environment is important to people along with animals. It affects everything people do. In the movie people were forced to come together to do something about it. The people were sick of facing trials and watching the deaths of children because of the chemicals in the water. It really makes people do things about them and environmental problems are serious. They have to be dealt with quickly or it may hurt current generations and future generations. People may not be able to fix the problems we make today in the future. Environmental problems are serious and need to be dealt with quickly.

Ocean Eiler

Ocean Eiler is a designer from PBS KIDS. Actually, he is far more than a designer because he is good at a lot of things. As a Senior Designer at PBS KIDS, he has molded his title to UX design, web design, frontend development, Flash development, video editing, audio FX creation, soundscape mixing, print design, game development, mobile development and a touch of management. Besides, he is also an artist, a DJ, a skateboarder, and a rock climber. He was graduated from Ohio University with double degrees.After graduation, Ocean got his first job in Switzerland. He then returned the United States and has worked for WOUB, Pixel & Ink, Matrix Group, and finally PBS KIDS. The lecture was mainly about the designing process of the PBS KIDS GO! Eiler introduced how did the idea come up and how was the website finally realized. Through the lecture, I learnt more about the process of designing a website on desktop, including sketches, wireframes, color choices, and user testing, which is a very important part of operating an effective and attractive website.Besides, I also learnt that websites could be built with both front and back end simultaneously under tight deadlines. The PBS KIDS GO! was accomplished and put up online only in 12 days, whereas Eiler told me that a huge website project usually take 6 months till a whole year. After the lecture, I am more aware of the significance of HTML and CSS. Since I am applying for summer interns recently, I found that most companies require coding skills. Proficiency of Photoshop and Illustrator nowadays is the lowest requirement, yet coding is dominating in the future.There are a large amount of coding opportunities online await. I really have to develop my coding skills as soon as possible. During the lecture, Eiler mentioned â€Å"Big paper, big ideas†, which was said by Chris Bishop, the boss of Eiler’s. Eiler also showed us his working process of the PBS KIDS GO! on paper from sketches to final version. Howev er, I could not agree with him on this point because the â€Å"big paper† idea is not suitable for all websites, especially for the mobile web.As I saw Eiler’s work on large sheets of paper, the â€Å"big paper† idea is really great for desktop web, whereas nowadays, mobile web is more important than desktop web and is dominating in the future. Recently, I read an article on designshack. net, which was discussing whether to go mobile web first or the desktop while designing a website. The author finally concluded that designers should go mobile first not only due to the rapid increase of mobile users, but also because â€Å"progressively enhancing† the website from mobile devices to desktops will make the website both functional and beautiful.The author of the article called going desktop first â€Å"graceful degradation† and going mobile first â€Å"progressive enhancement†. Comparing the article’s viewpoint with Eiler’s sugge stion during the lecture, I thought they were both right. Eiler showed us some data at the beginning of the lecture, which shows that 98% PBS KIDS users are desktop web users and around half of them use Internet Explorer. Besides, the users’ major screen resolution is 1024Ãâ€"768.The data is so different from the investment of a larger range of web users, which shows that Google Chrome is occupying the major browser market and mobile users are far more than 2%. Therefore, my opinion is that kids are using outdated desk/laptops (may be substituted by their parents) more often, and hence, they do not really need mobile web. For websites on desktop, the â€Å"big paper† idea is effective and helpful because it contains more details and possibilities. Whereas considering a wider range web user, going mobile first seems more important and necessary.Even Google has just announced that their future websites are going mobile first. Currently, smartphones are playing critical roles in people’s daily lives. People can get information more quickly and effectively through mobile web. Base on the increasing rate of mobile web users, mobile web will definitely change the structure of the Internet even computer companies. Designing a website on mobile devices more emphasizes on function and â€Å"big paper† idea will not be suitable for a small screen. Overall, the PBS KIDS GO! as a great palette, it is so active but not messing with the colorful content. It also balances the relationship between tidiness and excitement. The outgoing design is really attractive for kids. Although the grid design feels a little redundant for me, it is direct and convenient for children. The only thing I concerned was when I tested the website through both dolphin and chrome browsers on my cell phone, the grid did not slide smoothly. But since the mobile users are so few, it does not affect the user experience generally.

Health care Transparency Essay

Health care Transparency is openness about the quality of healthcare provided, sharing information whether it be good or bad for the purpose of improvement. In the past, health care transparency was secretive, people did not want to share patent information for reason of privacy to their clients as well to avoid law suits. However there is a way in which you can share information without violating doctor patient privilege. The future of health care transparency looks as though it is going to improve, I say improve because I agree with Dr. Patrick Crawley that the movement will allow sharing of information therefore allowing improvements to be made leading to less law suits. Really kind of taking on a best practices type of mentality as well sometimes we need others to step in and help work through issues that may arise. Overall I think that hospitals becoming transparent will force improvement, at first I am sure there will be a struggle just as in any new process however once the kinks are worked out improvement will shine through. Health care transparency will help patients make more informed decisions when deciding where to go when care is needed, this may cause longer wait times at first however raising the standards and outing the facilities that are not providing good treatment cause only force them to do whatever it takes to increase standards and service provided. We as consumers need to become more informed decisions makers however with information available to us is limited we are unable to make accurate decisions on where to receive our care. We have systems/sites in which we can choose babysitters, plumbers and other types of services we made need why would we not want to choose our health care facility with the same type of research. Some of this information is already made available by some facilities, such as checking out wait times and even being able to sign up to be seen before even arriving improving the time in which we would wait to  receive care. The more we alignment with this advancement the better the care we will see.

Five basic components of human societies Essay

There are five basic components of the human societies: population, culture, material products, social organization, and social institutions. These components may either deter or promote social change. The size of population will greatly affect the social change. If the population is large, chances are social changes will be promoted. More people will usually result in more ideas, pushing for changes because a larger population will generate more problems and it has a greater need for solutions. A large population will also have more norms and laws and sanctions. Culture includes values, beliefs, norms, knowledge, language, and symbols. Culture can both deter and promote social changes. A society’s belief and values can be essential for technology to grow and develop. Some societies tend to be more conservative and would like for things to continue to be the same, which will likely deter that society from social changes. However, as a society gained more knowledge, there will be people who will want to push for change because of that gained knowledge. New information and discoveries will result in new inventions. Material products consist of a limited amount. Material products will be more likely promote changes because people will try to find other alternatives for those existing products. Social organization is a network of relationship between its members. There are people who hold social positions and political roles that may deter or promote changes. Reformers who hold office positions will persuade more changes in society while conservationist will want things to remain the same. Social institutions consist of the education system, family, economy, government, and religion. A society’s education system has a big influence on the society. If that education system is promoting changes, people in that society will grow up having that thinking, vice versa. A person’s upbringing will also influence a person’s push for change or deterrence of change. The economy’s status holds great importance for change or not. If an economy is not doing so well, changes will likely occur. The government may be pushing for change if a reformist holds political position but if a conservationist will want things to be the same. Religion ties in with a  person’s belief and values. Depending on the religion, a person will be more likely to have moral values and religious beliefs that will either want change or deter from change.
